GLAGOLIC · HISTORY & REFLECTION

What is the Glagolitic alphabet?

The letters may look unfamiliar. Their first purpose was wonderfully concrete: to put language into writing.

A script with a history

Glagolitic is an early Slavic alphabet, generally attributed to Saint Cyril in the ninth century. It was used to write Church Slavonic and other Slavic languages. Surviving manuscripts and printed religious books preserve that history. The scholarly proposal linked below gives an accessible introduction to its use and development.

Look at a letter before interpreting it

Start with Ⰰ, known here as AZ. Notice the meeting of straight lines and a rounded form. Trace it slowly on paper, then compare it with another letter in the collection. Looking, copying, and comparing are simple ways to become familiar with an unfamiliar script. You do not need to assign a hidden message to every line.

Historical writing and a contemporary oracle

Glagolic uses a collection of 40 letters as the starting point for a creative oracle. Its reflective meanings, elements, and sound pairings belong to this contemporary project. They are not presented here as a reconstruction of medieval beliefs. A card’s name, its historical use as a letter, and its meaning in the oracle are different kinds of information.

Where to begin

Explore the letter directory and choose one shape that catches your attention. Read its modern interpretation, then write a response in your own words. For historical study, use the scholarly source below alongside the collection. For personal reflection, treat a reading as an invitation to think, while keeping your own judgment at the centre.
